Should Immigration Be a Police Issue?
Communities across the New York region are debating whether their local police should be involved in immigration issues. For example, in Morristown, N.J., the mayor has proposed to enroll the police in a small but growing federal program that trains local officers to help enforce federal immigration laws. The program is known as 287(g), for a section of the 1996 Immigration and Nationality Act that allows local officers, after being trained, to “identify, process, and when appropriate, detain immigration offenders they encounter during their regular, daily law-enforcement activity.”
How do you feel about what role, if any, local police should play in federal immigration issues?

Illegal Immigration is a very touchy issue which ever way you look at it, if you let people come and live in here then they take the jobs that nobody wants and get paid the salary that nobody is willing to work for, which is a good thing. They work in 21st century sweat shops in a way. On the other hand they dont pay taxes and live in the states for free which is obviously not the right thing. Kicking them all out isnt the answer either because then there will be nobody to do the work they do, which is needed. Based on the video we watched the woman who was deported was making bookbags for the U.S. army. Nobody doubts that the majority of the illegal aliens in this country are here to do the right thing and live freely, the answer to this is no simple task. We must find a way to accomidate all aspects of this problem. A way to make it easier for our people and our country. The one thing that is sure is we do not need to please the people who do not belong here.
Wow! I liked the way that Mike Zilber posted his blog. Communities across the New York region are debating whether their local police should be involved in immigration issues. I think the police should be involved in the illegal immigrant problem. The police are closer to the everyday people in the street. People in the article thought that the crime rate was large for the immigrants from what the article said, this is not so. I don't want the Federal Government to have any more power than it does. People coming to this country will always be a problem this is the best country in the world. I know because my parents were not born here and they like it here very very much. So maybe we should just figure but better managing skills for the people that come here.
Illegal immigration is not a touchy subject I don’t feel as if any one cares when they are at your house cleaning or mowing lawns, Or even getting you the good movies that didn’t come out yet. But when someone that just brought a bootleg movie. Then goes to register their child in school that is full of little immigrant children. Whose parent’s don’t pay taxes just don’t contribute anything to keeping the school system with books, heat, computers or anything else.
Mean while you as the American you are getting killed in taxes just making it also. Another thing I don’t like about immigration people they don’t believe that anyone else is struggling but them and their families. Which is not true everyone is always saying how no American would take those jobs. I feel we never get the opportunity to even hear about them before the immigration boat is pulling up ready to take over.
I am pretty sure that the homeless veteran that we watched a documentary on. Would have done those jobs if he would have a way of knowing about them. Even though the pay would have been low am sure he would have just been happy to be able to do something to build up to what he needed to have. We have to remember that these immigration people have places to live and food to eat while working at these places so it can’t be that bad.
We just always assume that Americans feel as if we are too good. But you really don’t know what a desperate person might do. I also do agree that we need some of them here just not as many as we do have. Which steams from the government trying to make money off of these people. I also don’t believe that we are taken away from police officers time on the job by giving them this responsibility.
Everyone in class was trying to make the point of what is more important. Don’t you think these police officers are well-trained people who can decide the difference between picking up an immigration person or going to check on a fight around the corner? I don’t think any cop rather get an immigration person then break up a fight or something even more serious than that.
When we watched the video clip in class, the only question I had was how could our country tear apart a family, who's son is a citizen, but parents are not? I don't understand how we could kick illegal immigrants out of our country who may have immediate family members born in the U.S. Would the government really kick out a little boy's parents and force other family members to take care of him? I don't understand how that could be okay.
I believe instead of trying to kick illegal immigrants out of our country we should try to get them to become citizens because like Christine said they use public resources that they do not pay taxes towards. I don't think that my parents should pay for a child's education, when that child's parents do not also contribute. When you're a citizen you can reep the benefits of your citizenship, which includes public resources. When you are not a citizen you should not recieve those benefits.
I don't think that local police in large cities should have to worry about policing illegal immigrants when they have things like crime to worry about. I wouldn't want somebody to be murdered and have no cops around to help because they're all going after illegal immigrants. Instead the government should worry about employing more immigrant officers to go after immigrants.
i dont think that police officers should focus on illegal immigrants becausse there are far more things going on that should be the police officers concern but i do understand why they use the police officers to help round up the illegal immigrants.
its kind of like sand in the palm of your hands and the sand slip away through you fingers so like with the illegal immigrant they slip pass the people patroling the gates and the cops are used to collecet the ones that were slipped away. personally i think it shouldn't be their job. and yes it is the police officers job to enforce the laws and i guess that illegal immigrants are againt the law but who fault is it that they got over the boarder or whatever it's called. basically what i am saying is the police havemuch more thing to deal with rather then concerning them self with who is illegal and who isn't
Illegal immigration is something I have always been on the fence about. Like Christine mentioned just like immigrants there are a lot of Americans going through the struggle to stay alive with a shelter and food. I do believe that we should take care of our fellow Americans that need jobs and food before we look at immigrants. Our fellow citizens come first before anything. Then again I also understand the hardship the immigrants are going through to come to a different environment to change their lives around. They deserve the right to have opportunities as well and like Kaitlyn mentioned we need to try and work out how we can make these illegal immigrants citizens. This way they can help with the money we pay for with our taxes and other things. They can work and contribute what they need to by being a citizen. With that everybody is equal and there wouldn’t be much to complain about.
As to the question, how do you feel about what role, if any, local police should play in federal immigration issues? None is my answer. The federal is in charge of issues dealing with immigrants and our local police are needed for other things we require them for. As mentioned immigrants have a very low percent of crime rate. So we wouldn’t need our local police worrying about them doing any damage because if anything they are trying to hide and not be seen. The local police have other things to worry about and take care off rather then worrying about the immigrants.

I learned a lot of things about this topic today wehen we discussed it. I felt that when we first touched the subject, that if you are an illegal immigrant you should not be able to come into the country. But then, I realized after we got in depth into the discussion, that we do need immigrant for certain aspects in this country. Immigrants take jobs that we need done, but no American would do them for the type of work it involves or the low wages offered for the position. If we do want to regulate it more though, the police and not just the feds need to get involved. Police can cover more of an area while the feds would probably just cover the areas surroundings borders. Illegal immigrants also bring more crime into the country. Piracy and bootlegging and common crimes commited by illegal immigrants and this is taking away the value of the people who work hard to produce music and clothing. People kept mentioning how they feel that the police have more important things to worry about, but this issue seems to be just as important as the rest or else we would not be discussing it today.
I agree with Zilber in that the benefits that illegal immigrants bring to Americans often causes us to let those not causing problems stay. They are cutting OUR lawns for us, trimming OUR hedges for us,cooking OUR food us...ect and fulfill positions in jobs that Americans feel is below them. In return, by working in these jobs they are also gaining experience, money and often having families of their own. Illegal immigrants have every right to have a family and a concrete better life of their own but it still stands to reason that they want the benefits but refuse to go about the proper way of entering a country. If you don't like the life in your country and decide to come here...why would you think that you are immune to having to abide by the law? Second of all, if you can't even follow a law to get into the country what makes us think that they can follow the laws of our country once they are actually in it? I don't believe that we should "tear families apart" but i do believe that this family is reaping the consequences of a good choice played out in the incorrect manner due to the fact that had they all gone about entering the country legally this would not even be an issue.
