Cartoon

Chimpanzee Stimulus Article and cartoon.

Should the media be censored?

Does this cartoon serve its purpose?

If you were editor of a newspaper would you allow this to be printed?

How might the cartoon violate the First Amendment?

The media shouldn't be censored because everyones allowed to have there own right to there own opioin. If I was the editor to the newspaper I would allow it to be edited, because it gets people to talk about the cartoon from my newspaper. It would get me feel good to know that my newspaper is being talked about. I don't think the cartoon violates the First Amendment.

I don't think the media should be censored. I think that the media cares about making money and thats exactly what the Post did. This cartoon made so much money and I don't think the drawer was being racist. I agree with Mr.Brown when he said that he was very smart with this idea. It's the peoples fault for tanking it as racist.

If I was the editor I wouldn't have printed the article because he knew what would happen or he should have known and everybody bought the post for one day but the people are trying to get the Post shutdown so they lose in the long run.

I don't think its right to make this cartoon a big deal because I agree wit Melissa when she said it doesn't have to be Obama and if it was Bush there wouldn't be a big deal. I think it goes way back to slavery because black people were slaves. White people weren't slaves so when they have Bush as a monkey no one makes a big deal because hes white. Racism still lives among us and its a shame.

I DONT THINK THIS CARTOON IS RACIST. The media is obviously trying to make money by making an incident into something that could catch the people minds. This incident was about a chimpanze- i dont if thats how u spell it- attacking a women and the police came and shot it. Now by adding these, "They'll have to find someone else to write the next stimulas bill", they are trying to make it racist by comparing Obama to the chimpanze. The media is so bull for making this incident into a racist thing for money. This probably pissed off a lot of people and it should. This has definitely made an impact on history and I hope this doesnt happen again.

The media should not be censored. It gives the people within the media, freedom of speech. Yes The cartoon does serve its purpose, but on the other hand it can imply racist topics. To me the cartoon wasn't really there to downgrade anyone but to show the reader a little political humor. If I had my own paper I wouldn't see the harm in printing it. Its very entertaining.

It is quite obvious that this cartoon was making some sort of reference to a derogatory racial epithet toward President Obama. I cannot think of any other explination, other than a reference to the chimpanzee that brutally murdered its owner last week. Then again, the chimp was in no way linked to the writing of the much anticipated economic stimulus package, so this is blatant racism. I don't think an event like this should lead to censoring the media because the paper is going to get what they deserve. They are going to lose lots of readers and even more credibility, which is dangerous in a city like ours where there are many other papers to compete with. The blasts The New York Post will receive from other media outlets and groups should suffice a strong enough punishment.
The underlying thing that often goes unoticed after controversies like this one, is that people actually think this way. It may not make sense to a sensible person, but there are people that feel this way about the President and the people of his race, even in New York City. It may come as a suprise, but it is an often forgotten truth.
Unless I strongly agreed with the cartoon's message (which, don't you worry, I don't) there is no way I would allow this cartoon to be printed. It is an example of the sheer racism and hate that much of our country is unfortunately exposed to every day. Then again, if I was fine with allowing it to be printed, I would have every right to do so, under the law and the First Amendment of our Constitution. Though morally, the cartoon gives off a hate-spewing and morbid message to all who will read it and should not be entered into print.

There is no reason for the media to censor anything. In ways there’s nothing wrong with it because we have always had these cartoons in our newspapers. There have been numerous times G.Bush has been shown as a monkey. But no one has done anything about it. I think it’s just the thinking of people now that we do have a black president they try to pin point at everything and find anything that they can prove to be something racial against colored people. It does violate the first amendment because it’s freedom of speech. Even though many of us have been offended by this cartoon it is what they feel as. It clearly does not start that Obama is killed. It just mentions an ape with that caption. We do have to remember that ape’s were also another name for the government back in the day.

I don't think that the media should sensor these things, the post was allowed to put that out there and had every right too, even though it was morally wrong. I defiantly wouldn't have printed this article if i was the editor, i also can't think of any other meaning that was directed here besides racism.
M. Frank is right, the post will end up losing lots of readers and they'll pay for it.

I dont think the media shouldnt be censored at all.Unless its suggesting to do something wrong in the eyes of the law. Also the media and everyone in the U.S is able to state their opinion . And in this situation the person was stating his opinion through the cartoon. And if it was refering to president Obama the same thing happened with president budh he was depicted as a monkey also, as a recall there were so many games on the internet where you could shoot president bush so if this cartoon caused an up roar why wasnt there an up roar when president bush was in office?

I don't think the media shouldn't be censored because nobody cares whats in the newspaper. It is the right of people who making up good and bad situation. I don't see any wrong with published this cartoon in newspaper.

This issue is hard to take sides on. ou can either limit the rights of Americans which is unconstitutional or you can let reporters express themselves regadless of who they are offending. I think that violence should not be ortrayed in cartoons - whether it be in a newspaper or on television. You can express your thoughts and ideas without implying hurtful actions.

I agree Ms. Browne when she stated in class that it shouldnt matter if the cartoon was specifically about Obama because the same thing was done to President Bush. We didnt make a big deal about it when it was being done to him; so why is it such a big deal now. Is it because Obama is an African American and becasue thats what his specific ethicity was called? Truthfully, it shouldnt matter because nobody shoudl be called names ( especially after an animal...

This Cartoon is a racist statement towards blacks but in particular to our president Mr. Obama. It is a depiction of which people who is not in favor of having an African American as a leader will ignite feelings of harming our president. I can understand it is a cartoon that the publisher was meant to be a joke but at the same time it was in bad taste and should not have been printed in the newspaper.

At first, when I looked at it, it didn't seem racist. The more I looked at it and heard about it, I thought it is racist. What is the cartoonist's message behind it? Even though, one can argue Obama didn't write the bill. Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi and other democrats wrote the bill on the president's order.

The cartoon served its purpose in an attempt to sell newspapers. It may have worked, but another one of these cartoons could cause them to lose readers. Ethically, it is wrong to allow the cartoon to be printed, but again under the First Amendment everyone has a right.

As almost everyone said, I also agree that the media shouldn't be censored. The whole reason for "media" is basically to speak your mind and show your opinion of a certain topic. I don't really understand the purpose of this cartoon but obviously its causing commotion. Based on the other comments it seems as if the cartoon was supposedly "racist". Yeah... I don't see that. If I was the editor of this paper HELLS YEAH I would allow it to become printed. I really don't see what wrong, and well I would be kinda glad if people were taking it the wrong way, at least more people would buy the paper. Basically, I think that this whole cartoon went way out hand, and became a big deal for no reason. And it just seems stupid because the whole point of a newspaper is so that in certain sections you can voice your opinion.

When I first saw the picture I kind of though it was funny until I read what the cop was saying .Then I kinda said that it was a little messed up but for those who feel offended by this picture I think you have to understands this a prefect example of freedom of speech you don’t have too support the picture but at the end of the day whoever draw this picture did his job because everyone was looking for this picture and we had a complete hour conversation on this issue in class. There were far too many other important things we should have talk about like Obama stimulus plan . Plus a lot of student use too make fun of bush for look like a monkey I didn’t hear anyone saying that was wrong or that they were very offend by the pictures maybe I’m just miss the point

I agree with Sanaa because it is hard to take sides. The media should not be censored because everyone is entitled to their own opinion but if you’re putting something out in the newspapers like that it doesn’t seem right. Obama was trying to pass the stimulus bill so I see why people would believe it was "racist".

True everyone should be allowed to their own opinion, but when it comes to disrespecting the nations leader i think it's the same as breaking the law. Even though they say that the cartoon isn't rasits they should still make show that it doesn't offened anyone in anyway.

I believe that the media shouldn’t be censored because it is freedom of speech and they cant be stopped from writing or drawing what they want. Though if I was the editor of that newspaper I wouldn’t have had published such editorial cartoon, because it can offend the readers in many ways and is very unprofessional. Supposedly newspapers have to keep everything professional and putting up that cartoon definitely wasn't the way to go and as my classmates said that cartoon was put up in order to make money and the newspaper did it without caring about any future consequences.

As everybody is saying that it doesn't mean racist or anything against president Obama, I simply agree with them. As Matt F had said that " Then again, the chimp was in no way linked to the writing of the much anticipated economic stimulus package". People were trying to link the cartoon ith other things, without knowing that it was simply a way to grab attention to the readers. Alot and alot of newspapers were sold, people had different ideas, some were against it, and some UNDERSTOOD what the article was really addressing. The post needed to sell newspapers, and they did, but if they keep putting up cartoons like this, as Matt f said they might lose business, when readers wont buy anymore.

The cartoon is just something that the media is hyping up. I'm pretty sure that is the media wasn't going to talk about the cartoon, it wouldn't be as mush of a big deal. It is a little bit of the public's falut for buying into the hype and even adding on to it. Everybody has their own view at the cartoon and shouldn't believe the media. To answer the question if i would put this cartoon on my newspaper, it would really depend on my newspaper's business. If my newspaper is doing superp and ahead of all the other newspaper then i would have second thoughts about putting this into the paper, but if my newspaper is struggling and i know this cartoons will give my newspaper the publicity then i would hands down put this on.

The media should not be censored mainly because of the first amendment, and secondly because the media is one of the most powerful ways to get a message across to people.Censoring the media is like telling a person they can drive, but they can only drive at 20 mph at all times. That would be an unfair and unconstitutional thing to do to the many of writters that are in the world. There can be an idea of restrictions or making stricter rules for publishers.

I don't believe that they should censor carttoons because it opens the eyes of the public .It gives you another person point of view. But however in this case the cartoon of a monkey gettin shot with the words bubbled its looks like we are going to need a new person to write the stimulus bill is straight wrong and can come across racisit. Also monkeys were the name of black people back in the day. They drew george Bush as a monkey but sad to say the skin color becomes a factor

I don't feel that the media should censor something of this level. Although the cartoon probably is hinting something that is ethically wrong, the illustrator still has a right to express their views. Sometimes censorship can work well for society but most of the time, it’s just too much. We’re up to the point where in schools, the word sports in blocked from web searches.

I think the media should be censored. Its against the constitution but at the same time its such a dangerous thing. THe media is the reason for treason and heresy against government. Many newspapers around the world go against America and people show strong hate because of the things that come in the newspapers. So i think it should be censored because of the dangerous influence it has on the society.
