Animal Rights Debate?

How might this debate have gone better? What needs to happen to make student presentations work more smoothly?

There shouldn't be animal rights, but we should have the right to protect them though. For example, if you see a big spider on the ceiling of your room, wouldn't you hit/kill it? You wouldn't let it live though right because if you did, it would've probably given you a bite. So if they had rights and we couldn't kill them, I probably would put myself in a bubble. This debate could've gone better by what Mr. Brown said. It would've been better if we were in our table groups and talked about it, then by each table, we give our opinions/views rather than mixed talking from people.

I agree with tiffany their shouldnt be any animal rights to a certain extent.I do agree that animals shouldnt have the same rights as humans because one their not human and two they dont do the things that humansdo on a daily basis, but they should have the same rights as us when it comes to hurting or killing another person. The reason why i say this is because even though animals are'nt human they are living things and need to be taken care of and not abused. but i do think if there was a situation where the dog tried to attack you or your family then you kill the animal because it's harming you but if its not harming you then leave it alone. I think if you get a pet animal treat it with love, respect, and be loyal to it, because there are other people who would treat it better if you cant. This debate couldv'e gone better like tiffany said if we all sat at our table and did a vote of which side you were on and then discuss it within your group and at the end discuss it with the class.

I think animals should have rights. They should not have the same rights as a human. But they do deserve rights. The help shift our society in a different way. It may seem weird but animals do bring people closer together. Today’s debate was all over the place. There need to be more structure and more cooperation from the class. Everyone should of stated their opinion and participated equally. Their needed to be more questions and more information to have a constructive debate.

I agree with every one animal should have some type of rights but not the same rights as humans. Because they don’t walk and they can't talk. So we can't expect them to drive, cook, by a house, vote and etc. they belong in to the wild. We just deicide that some of them can be helpful to us. So we give them some type of rights. By teaching dogs to help the handicaps and teaching monkeys sign language and showing other animals tricks to entertain us.

I own a shih tzu and it amazes me how we treat my dog as a human being. Its funny cause we don't treat him as a dog. He goes to the doggy parlor and all But for me to sit on the opposite side disagreeing that animals shouldn't have rights was really wierd. Why I sat on that side is because I think animals should get a certain amounts of rights but not as much as a human being. In the world we living in today you can spend your whole life behind bars just for hitting a dog, Im not syaing its okay for people to hit dogs but if you showing a dog right from wrong your going have to do what you have to do. I agree with tiffany when she says we should be able to protect and save them. Like put them in their proper habitat so they can live that's all the rights I think they need. Also I feel that if the class had a bigger arguement about this topic the presentation would've been better. Don't worry wes, you did good.

Even though people disagree that animnals should not have rights, they should aleast respect a animnal with soome type of rights, jus because there not humans doesnt mean anything animals have feelings to and theres many animals that are really smart. Like Sam said they should have rights but not the same as humans. i looked up on animals rights >>>http://www.objectivistcenter.org/cth--391-FAQ_Animal_Rights.aspx

I think the debate would have gone better if everyone told their point of view one at a time. Also, if the person who wanted us to debate asked further questions and was more clear(not trying to be harsh).
I think the person who is going to present needs to have a clear understanding of the topic. They must have a good plan on how to present their presentation. The classmates should not talk while the presenter is presenting(talk when told to).

I thiink that the way society thinks of what is right to do to any animal and what is wrong , sets up certain limits that animals have.
Animals are living things sent by God like us humans. So, they have some rights like we humans do, as well.

I think that there shouldn't be any animals rights but we was humans have rights to protect them though because they are living creatures. I agree with Octavia how she said that animals can't be compared to humans because they are not like humans, for example, they dont do what we humans do on a daily basis. But animals can be trained to act better so they dont hurt us humans. I think that humans should train the animals so they can learn how to adapt to the environment so they dont harm anyone.

I'm a little torn with this subject. This is because even though I love animals, after the class discussion I dont think animals should have rights. If they had rights, it would be like treating them like humans and they are not evolved to that extent. However, I do feel that animal cruelty laws should remain in affect. Like someone said in class, if someone is being cruel towards an animal, whats stopping them from taking it to the next level by going after people.
I think the discussion would have went more smoothly if there was an even amount of people on each side and we had set questions so we would really think and have opinions.

I think that animals should have some kind of right because people say that " animals are peoples best friend" and also some people out there treat their animals like they are part of their family. But also in most country people really don't care about animals.

Animal’s should not be given rights but they should not be treated like garbage because they don’t have rights. If you buy a dog you should take care of it and if your not you should not get one. But because I have a lot of animals and I love them with all my heart. I don’t treat them like they are people or like a person but I don’t treat them wrong. But my mom is a different story she makes it like they are her kids I don’t get that but a lot of people so that. So animals need to be treated with some kind of respect and they are a big responsibility and it you can fulfill them I don’t know why you would get one then.

I fell the same as Megan. I'm also torn at this. I believe that animals should have rights but still to a certain extent. I believe that many people see killing a dog or cat intentionally to be horrible because they would look at a dog or cat as a common pet to humans. Killing a spider or rat isn't so big because I feel they don't do anything for us. Many don't see these types of animals with humans. A dog is said to be man's best friend. We see them as loyal, filled with emotions, trustworthy animals. As for cats they are used to keep the rats away. They still help humans. I still fell torn because Mr. Brown still raises good points to the argument. Even though a rat or a spider isn't the common house hold pet why do they have to die. They still are animals. Its also like what Lea said it all goes back to T.V shows and advertisements.

I agree with tiffany, there shouldn't be any animal rights to a certain extent. Animals shouldn't have the same rights as humans because they're just don't compare to humans... they aren't a citizen and can't give back to the government. Dogs should have some rights because dogs do help humans like the elderlies or the handicaps. If your going to have a dog as a pet... you have to love the dog unconditionally. Dogs aren't slaves. They have feelings too. It is so absurd that people would actually hurt and abuse animals.

The debate would have been better if it were more organized If each side had organized thorough arguments, it would have made a better debate.

I agree with Megan & Bryan. Its difficult to say what rights animals should & shouldn't have. I also agree with Tiffany when she said, "We should have the right to protect them." Witn that said, animals should be protected because they have feelings just like us. They feel pain & joy just like humans do.

I believe there should be animal rights. Although laws on animal rights will most likely never change it is not moraly correct to allow animal abuse. Animals are living breathing creatures and should be treated with respect. I can understand why many believe animals should not have rights but that is only do to out phobias and fear of the unknown. If people understood animals to a greater extent than they do now i believe things would be different.

This debate could have gone better if it was more debatable. To have a debate, you need a topic that pretty much isnt a general consensis. Everyone seems to agree on this topic. Though the definition of what "animal rights" are, is blurry, everyone thinks that animals should have rights.
Even for this debate with this topic to run a little smoother, the right questions needed to be asked in order to spark a debate. You cant just walk into a room with 30 teenagers and expect them to engage in bantar when there is nothing to argue about, unless you play devils advocate.
When a student is presenting to a class, they should come prepared for every situation. Anything can happen, so such as a teacher would be prepared, the student should take that into consideration and be equally as prepared.

I agree with how everyone said there shouldn’t be any animal rights to a certain extent. I also agree that animals shouldn’t have the same rights as humans. Animals don’t have the daily lifestyles unlike the humans. But I feel that should animals have rights like humans in which they can’t be hurt or killed purposely. Like what Megan said, they shouldn’t be treated like humans, but animal cruelty is wrong. I feel that the debate would have been better if it was more organized and there was an even amount of people of each side arguing. Also if we knew the questions before hand that we were arguing.

In my opinion I still believe wesley did a good job in presenting. I think in the future though presentations will go better when there is better preperation and stories that can catch everybody in the class attention. And also a bit more of a firm grip on the classroom by the presenter.

I dont think that there should be animal rights. Even though they are animals and we love them but it wouldnt make much sense to put them in jail if they killed someone, because what are they ganna do in jail, they can do anything but stare at the walls. But other then that I think that we should have the right to protect them but they should not have rights because it would not make much sense.
