The Truth

Lots of information.... How has your view of AL Gore changed because of this movie? What is the former VP telling us in this movie? What can be done? What are we to do now that we know of the "Inconvenient Truth"?

NYTimes Article.

To surge or not to surge.

Baghdad seems to be rising in violence, Shiite and Sunni Islamic sects have plunged into Civil War and the US is considering sending 20,000 more troops to Iraq. What has brought us to this point? Why are so many split on the issue of trying to “win” the war in Iraq? According to today’s NYTimes how is the prospect of increasing troops splitting the newly elected majority of the Democratic congress? Michael once again was outspoken during class, “ We are never going to win the war in Iraq….” He also made the point that the US at least owes it to the people there to leave them with a peaceful country. There is no right answer here, but I would like to know what each of you think about our possible increase in troop levels.

When President George Bush addresses the nation on Wednesday night at 9pm what will he probably say to the country?

HARPO PRODUCTIONS

Oprah has just opened a $40 million dollar school in South Africa to help that country’s most needy citizens (adolescent girls). Josh made a statement in class attacking the critics of Oprah who claim the money would be better spent in the US saying, “Its not her responsibility to help everyone in the US” How do we feel about Josh’s comment. Although some of the comments in class tended to get a little side tracked there seemed to be three big issues. Should American philanthropists be restricted to where they give there attention? Do wealthy entrepreneurs have a responsibility or obligation to give back to the people they have created there fortune from? Once a person makes their money and accumulated an abundance of resources can the person use those resources how he or she deems worthy? What are the moral and legal obligations of the extremely wealthy?

Hanged!

Inspired by Superfly's blog, today’s classroom discussion focused around on the hanging of Saddam Hussein. Watching the videos of the actual event was a little too shocking, however even more shocking was the series of events leading up to the hanging. According to the NYTIMES there were procedural errors, and questions of responsibility. Did Saddam Hussein receive “justice”? What problems in the process are coming to light? What was America’s role in the process? As American citizens what should be our next course of action?
