Should we hold our politicians up to a higher standard? When people in power break the law should the consequences be harsher?
Why is prostitution leagal in Nevada and not NY? What laws did Spitzer break? Will this play a role int he upcoming election?

I think that they should be treated like us equally no higher or lower just because they are a governor. They broke the law and now they have to pay for it. It was wrong and they know that. They obviously are not stupid they know what they are doing. So they should be held accountable for what they have done. Just like we would have been.

The consequences should be harsher when the people in power break the law because they BROKE the law! I don't believe they have the right to get away with it just because they are in power. That's just stupid. We should hold our politicians up to a higher standard because nowadays, they get away with things [which they shouldn't be getting away with] and even though people know what he did, they don't care. They still want him as a governor anyway. The more higher the standards, the better. At least we have a chance to choose a good governor? Prostitution is legal in Nevada and not NY because they're used to it & there's already prostitutes on the streets and in hotels in Las Vegas. I guess you can say, it's just 'normal' to them; a not surprising thing. The laws that Spitzer broke were he made payments to the prostitute booking service. It's like a financial crime and worse yet, he could be cheating on his wife. Who knows? This will play a role in the upcoming elections because in order to find a good candidate for a good person, you need to know their backgrounds, right?

I think we should not hold our politicians up to a higher standard, there is really no reason why would should. Yes, they are elected into power and are suppose to be a model citizen and set an example. But they are human and humans do make mistakes (even the not so smart ones). When people in power break the law their power should not be held to a harsher standard just because they are in power. In Nevada prostitution is legal because none of the prostitutes positive for the HIV virus. As in New York a little bit more than half of the prostitutes are infected with the HIV virus. Elliot Spitzer broke many federal laws; such as federal money-laundering, federal structuring laws and the Mann Act. And I don’t see how this would play a role in this upcoming election if this doesn’t affect any of the candidates.
Read this for more information on the laws in both New York & Nevada
Read this for more information on Spitzers law breaking
Governor Spitzer should have to resign his position, because he did something that was illegal. Since, he was the person who went against prostitution and then did it himself; he should repent for what he was for before he did this illegal act.
He paied $4,500 for a call girl, which is a lot of money he wasted. He could have spent that money for a good reason.Such as, given money to a charity, or even bought his wife and children more of the things they wanted.
If I find out someone from my family does a similar thing like Spitzer did, then I would be angry and embarrassed. Since, you tusted that person a lot and then they do a horrible thing it hurts.
No we should not hold our politicians up to a higher standard if they break the law. the reson why I say this is because, they should not get any special treatment because they are in a higher power if any thing they should be frown down upon because they set double standards for us. for example how can you send a person to jail for doing the same thing that you just did and expect nothing to happen. I think he got what he deserves and i dont feel onebit sory for him because of the simple fact he knew what he was doing and if he was afraid of getting caught doing his dirt he should've never done what he did, SPITZER SHOULD HAVE THOUGHT ABOUT THE CONSEQUENCES like thesaying goes "whats done in the dark shall come to light" and it did. When people in power break the law the consequences should be harsher because there the ones trying to inforce the law on us but cant follow the laws themselves so they should be treated harsher because they know whats wrong and whats right. Arent they the ones telling us from right and wrong? Do people in power make laws that dont abide to there own standards?
Sam, I don't know how to tell you this but your agreeing with everyone who says politicians should be held to a higher standard. A HIGHER STANDARD DOES NOT MEAN HARSHER PUNISHMENTS. It means that they should be role models. It's like how we expect Mr. Brown to come in sober and ready to go everyday. If he were to come in drinking a bottle of Guinness, he wouldn't be setting a good example. We SHOULD expect authority figures to set a good example, it does not mean they should be punished more harshly.
I think that even if you are in politics, you should'nt be going against the law and breaking it. They shouldn't get away with it just because they have power because that's not fair at all. Some politicians get away with what they do, meaning they break the law and they get away with it like nothing happened. Even though spitzer took the side of prostitution, he should be punished because even after being a politician and breaking a law, he knew that was wrong. I think that this story will play a role in the upcoming elections because everyone wants a good governor with a clean background, who knows that law and doesnt break it.

I disagree with those who say politicians should be held more accountable than others according to the law. They are all citizens just like us and should be treated as such. When we start holding politicians to different standards they start thinking themselves different. Sure it was hypocritical for Spitzer to break prostituion laws after he came down so hard on other politicians, but that does not mean he desereves any more jail time than client number 2.
Spitzer was caught using the Bank Secracy Act which makes banks investigate transactions of
$10,000, and Spitzer was found transfering this kind of money into and out of off-sshore bank accounts.
I believe their must be something slightly mentally wrong with Spitzer. Just as most of the gay-basher of the world and people commiting hate crimes against gays are gay themselves, Spitzer probably went after prostitution so greatly as a way to atone his own wrong-doings. We disect the lives of politicians so greatly, why would anyone want to go into politics?
I agree with Octavia, WE SHOULDN'T HOLD OUR POLITICIANS UP TO ANY TYPE OF HIGHER STANDARDS!!Like it doesn't make any sense. In Nevada prositution is already legal but not in NY. In Nevada it wasn't a bit surprising at all but, in NY it was certainley because the majority of prositutes in New York are HIV positive. This can play a major role in the next elections even though Spitzer broke many federal laws.

I feel that this will play a big role in the next elcetion because a lot of things are happening and many people are not get introuble for the wrong things they do and they should be punish...spitzer broke the law many times and for letting him off the hook just makes him feel like he can do what ever he wants because no one is telling him he's doing wrong.polictions should not get treated good because that's not fare among others if they break the law they should be punish as well. If your agianst prositution why would you go ag head and do it that doesn't make since then to he that he paid a lot of money is ridicqulous. He know what he did was wrong.

Everyone I believe should be treated equally whether your part of the government or not. They broke the law, and the they have to pay for the consequences. I don't think our politicians in a higher standard should be be "punished" more. We are all citizens and we are all equal. Nevada prostitution is already legal but not in NY. It's not in New York because the majority of prostitutes in New York are HIV positive. I believe that this situation will play a major role in the upcoming election because we all want the our politicians to be at a higher standard and by him doing what he did... it just shocked people.

When you think of spitzer you think of someone who most look up to or most expect better of. So yes I think that people who has higher authority then us should be held on higher expectaions. I think that they should be held on higher expectations and yes I do believe that the punishment for them should be harsher cause the governement is the same ones that are quick to give us a life punishment jsut for a minor crime. I think the reason why prostitution is legal in nevada is because nevada has a lesser population then new york. From a website that I did research on http://www.slate.com/id/2186345/ they said laws they may look at is the man act, federal structuring laws, federal money laundering statutes. && YES most likely it will play a MAJOR role in the upcoming election..
i believe politcians should recieve a more harsh punishment for the simple fact that they are not treated as average people on a daily basis. They want to be above everyone when it suits them but as soon as it affects them negativley they want no part of it. These people are elected to represent the state and countrys they inhabit and need to be held accountable for there actions.
Matthew Morrison
I think that no matter who breaks the law, the punishments should remain the same. I agree with what Vicki said. Being a politician doesnt mean you can get off punishment easily nor does it mean you get harsher punishments. Politicians are people just like everyone else, and people make mistakes. So they shouldnt get a harsher punishment. That being, they are people just like everyone else, so they shouldnt get off punishment either. They break a law so they need to get the proper punishment.
Spitzer broke the prostitution law by paying an escort to cross state lines and come to where he was, which is illegal. This will play a role in the upcoming election, but for the wrong reasons. It should affect the election because he broke a law. But it will probably affect the election because people will see him as immoral for cheating on his wife. I think that is ridiculous because his personal life doesnt change how good of a politian he is.
I agree with everyone that said that Spitzer shouldn’t be held at higher standards. He did do something wrong and he did not show a good example to the people. But people have private lives and not everyone should be living their life for them. I think that it will play a role in the future elections because everyone will be asking about what they think about it and they would do such a thing.
I agree with Samantha Ross when it comes to a topic like the one we are facing here. I do believe that what Govenor Spitzer did was very wronng, but should he be punished just because he is a man of power? I think that he should feel obliagated to act in a more postive way because many people do look up to him, and everyone watches the actions that he makes. But on the other hand, I know the Governoe, more like ex Govenor Spitzer is only human. So is it really fair for us to judge, when we do not know how we would act if we would to be put in a siuation like the one he is in?
I believe that we should hold our politicians to a higher standard. I believe this because they are expected to be role models. I believe when a person of power breaks the law their punishment should be the same as everyone else. We elect these people to represent us. The situation with spitzer will effect the election because just like what Tiffany said people are going to want to know the backround of candidates.

At first, I didn't believe that politicians should be held to a higher standard. After reading John's comment, I think I am more clear on what this means exactly. We don't expect politicans to get any special privilages or anything, but they should be setting an example. I don't think that Spitzer, as a govener hiring prostitues sets a very good example. Even if he did it the legal way, he should be held accountable for what he did like Kristen said. Alyssa Faller asked if it was fair to judge him because he is only human. Although this is correct on a moral standard, Spitzer knows that he is constantly in the public eye. So his actions were not only, in my opinion, risky, and stupid but people should be able to judge him in any way they feel fit.

I agree with everyone that said politicians should be held at a higher standard. I say this because these are people that in some way represent the United States of America. And by them representing us, we look up to them as role models like Bryan said. But I feel that the punishment should be the same as normal, regular, everyday citizens. I feel that what Spitzer did was wrong and it shouldn’t be done as a person that represents the U.S. No, I don’t think people in power should get harsher consequences because they broke a law. Like what I said before they should be punished like every other citizen. I think this will play a big role in the next coming elections because all the voters would want to know the background and the pasts of the candidate they are voting for.
I agree with those who say that politicians shouldn't be held to higher standards. A job title shouldn't decide how a person is treated in the world. Politicians are regular people just like us. They bleed like us, walk like us & tlak like us. When they break a law, they should be punished the same way as we are.

yes I believe that we should hold our politicians to a higher standard. When your the face of an organization, committee, country, state or what ever it may be you attain a little bit more status which means your put into the lime light. The actions that mr spizer is being accused of are diplorable and inexcusable. Especially when he himself fights against the things that he did.

I think that politicians should be held to a higher standard. The reason why I say that is because they are elected to represent us and yes they do make mistakes, but he shouldn’t be making this big of a mistake. If I voted for the winning president and he made our debt a little bigger its ok but if he starts gambling with our countries money he should be penalized harsher than a regular person who gambles. It is alright to make mistakes because we are humans, but you should know when you go too far.
Yes we should because there’s a resin why we elect them to be our leader. They are supposed to be the one to set the good example. They are also people we look up to. I think yes it should be because they made the law and they should fallow it. What bright future are they setting for the new leaders? He broke a law that was illegal to pay some one for sex. this will pay a big role in any of is up coming election I wouldn't want to vote for a man that is taking advantage of his power for bad and not for good. I wouldn't want some one like that leading my country, state or town. But I do understand that every one makes mistakes. But as a lead you should already know your right for wrong.

I agree with everyone that said that Spitzer should not be held to a higher standard because he is just like one of us. How different is he from us to be treated differently? Yes, what he did was wrong but everyone makes mistakes and people learn from their mistakes.
i agree with matt 100%, politicians believe they have an extra overtowering us citizens, they do but just the sheer fact that they are sure of it makes me cringe. until they are caught for something they know is wrong, they dont want the special treatment anymore, they want to be treated the same as if a hobo tipped a $50 bill to a hooker on broadway.

I believe that politicians should be held to a higher stander for the simple fact that they are being chosen to represent the people. Their believes, ideals, and sometimes even morals are suppose to be ones that of which represent the people of whichever jurisdiction they serve. I cant tell you why prostitution is legal in Nevada and not New York, because I am not the law makers of either one of the two states. I can however tell you that Spitzer did break a law and he deserves to suffer the consequences. And the fact that he got caught doing what he did shows that he wasn't the smartest man for the job in the first place.lol
