Do these type of settings change public opinion?

I agree with Matt Frank when he said that both McCain and Obama show another side to them. They both were able to act like regular people instead of acting like they were above everyone else in the room. They were able to joke on each other without any hard feelings. Obama was winning the election because of popularity votes. After they both spoke at the dinner, McCain was able to get people to change their minds about him. He was very moving and impressed a lot of people.
I don't think these types of settings change public opinion. Rather, they make them. The public needs to see that their new potential president has a sense of humor. If a candidate can't garner a few laughs, no one will like him. If a candidate has no sense of humor, they would solve problems in a strict and conservative manner, possibly messing things up in the process.
I have to agree with what Matt FRank said in class about some people standing undecided about the election and then hearing this and changing their minds. Some people dont base these elections by how their future president is going to help the ecomony or the country. Its sad but very true, some of them base it on how much the person can make them laugh or how attractive they are. and if both candidtates dont fit those certain catergories; they dont vote. i believe that it shouldnt make an impact on the elcetion because their just showing us that their humans too. But unfortunately it does..
Amazingly, the performances by Barack Obama and John McCain on Thursday evening provided much of our country with a shocking realization that not many of them had yet to face: Presidential canditates are people too. They smile (not just when their opponent accuses them of lying), they joke, they even wear white bowties! Okay so maybe not all people wear white bowties, but much of America had to be surprised to hear and see the nominees for President cracking jokes as though they were at a celeb roast. This gave undecided voters a critical chance to examine their choices further. You choose your President based on their opinions on the issues you agree with. For the many undecided voters who struggle to formulate their own opinions, this event let them see another side of the canditates, a side that many would argue isn't as important as the one you see in the debates. As usual the undecided voters may be who it comes down to on election day. Though one bias of undecided voters is that they may lack the ability to decide things for themselves. They struggle to make their own opinions on issues and can be easily influenced. In this Family Guy clip (link below), you can see how the show depicts undecided voters as unintelligent people. They get overly excited about "buzz words" used by campaigns to perk up their ears. They nitpick on issues and the suspected personalities of the canditates.
This kind of debate was a more down to earth conversation. This to me wasn't really much of an debate, but a chance for the public to see the two candidates as a somewhat regular person. McCain to me was more on the offense and attacking Obama and putting all of Obama's problems in his face. Obama to me was more realistic and smart about the way he wanted America to see him as a regular person. Many Americans think that the two candidates are artifical and this setting showed the public that they're regular human beings like everyone else.
I think setting does change the opinions of others.People think both canidates are too serious, this shows a different side to their character. They show that they are not robots but that they are "real". Maybe if people see this their opinion might change and vote another way.
I really don't think this affects the public opinion. I thought it was great to see each of them cracking jokes on the campaign and everything. I loved McCains humor as well, especially since I always saw him as the more serious type.
its good to know that our coming president has a humor side. Being able to laugh at himself shows that he is a human and not a robot who only cares about politics. I don't believe that these settings change the public's opinion. It just shows them that our candidates isnt all politics.
I think that the video that we watched today was a good one to show voters the other side of McCain and Obama. Both McCain and Obama were able to show who they are other than politics. They were able to joke about them selves and not feel bad about it. For example Obama said his middle name was Steve. I found that kind of funny. This is good because it has people think twice about who to vote for. -K.weston
I personally think that this type of a setting shouldn't affect one's vote. I think that yes this shows a different side of the candidates but it shouldn't really matter so much. I think that this was just to show that the candidates have a sense of humor, that they can connect with the average person. But what really matters is what they do for the country. I mean yeah it matters that if there nice , funny etc. But It really shouldn't affect your vote. I also think that speeches written were very well. Overall this "show" that was put on was good, but it shouldn't make a decision whom a voter should vote for.
After seeing the video of Obama and McCain, I personally changed my thoughts about both candidates. I thought that McCain was a very reserved person, but after seeing this video I now know the other side of McCain. Also, I had seen that Obama had another creative side along with him. I disagree with what A.Rao had said that "I don't think these types of settings change public opinion". Mostly people our age or older do not really know about politics or who they want to choose for the next president. Which makes me go back to what Matt F. had said that "some peple would seriously base their vote by this video". This video really showed us how both McCain and Obama are in reality.
i believe that by trying to dis eachother out in public Obama and McCain have showed people they are like no other. they have also put on some entertainment which attracts more voters to vote. they had gotten their rumors cleared out which has changed the mind of people. this was just a trick to get the undecided voters on their side just as matt frank has stated.
I think that these types of settings do effect the public opinion;because most people are so used to McCain and obama being so serious this showed that they are real people and they do have another side to them then what you see in the debates and speeches they make.
I believe that yes public opinion does change when the setting changes. This is because in this conversation the candidates are showing another side that you really couldn't see while they were doing the actual presidential debates. In this meeting they are talking and sharing ideas without getting at each other. Everything that was going on in this setting just flowed and it wasn't planned to say or anything like that. So when the public sees this they see another side of the people that are running for office and they might change their point of view about them.
This debate showed the real sides of boht presendential candiates, and there personalites. That they can run a country and be cool with it. That they have a differnet and humorus side to them. It showed that they are regular people like us. As most people listened to both candiatates talking like real human beings that also made a decsion on who to choose.
I liked to see the two canidates show a different side to them laughing and what not. However some of the jokes were defensive.I think some people ideas and views changed about both canidates because they seem cool and down to earth
After watching this debate l change my mind whatever l thought about Obama and McCain. They both were able to talk back with funny jokes.I think that Obama have more power than McCain because Obama make people more impressed.I think most peoples will vote for Obama.
These type of settings don't really change public opinion. The day after they stop joking around they'll back at attacking theirselves. Majority of the voters have already made up their mind for who their going to vote for. Also we all know both of them are people. And the stupid people in this country will just probably vote for the person who had the better jokes.
To what A. Potter said "Obama was winning the election because of popularity votes." He wasn't winning because of popularity only Mr. Potter.
This debate took the stereotypical view of the president off. They are suppose to be uptight and very serious. Even I didn't think that they had a sense of humor and were able to take jokes and even maek jokes. Presidents' are put on a pedistal and this has shown America that they are still human beings and not that much different from the rest of America.
I enjoyed watching this. Seeing the presidential candidates at dinner helped me imagine how they would represent our country if attending dinner with other world leaders. This really helped Senator McCain's ego, now people see him as having a sense of humor.
This video shows a side of the two candidates that many people haven't seen. McCain said some really funny jokes that was followed by few political subjects. Obama also had alot of funny jokes that where aimed directly at McCain. (Some people in the backround looked like they were pretending to laugh just because they wanted to be polite)Overall it was great to see the two loosen up a bit. :]!
I agree with almost everyone who posted a comment, that both Macain and Obama have shown another side of themsleves in this video. I also thought it was funny that since Macain was the first to go and speak. He spoke good of Obama and kinda of put Obama on the spot to say something nice about him also. I really dont like macain but after watching this video I think of him diffrenetly. I might not agree with everything he says but I do know that he isn't a bad person.
I like the fact that both candidates are having a great time but i honestly don’t believe that they look human they remind me more of a a robot there jokes don’t feel natural .At least its better them blaming each other for everything . A. Deonarine
I do believe that these settings can change the public opinion. The election could come down to who is more funnier, even though I don't think that it should come down to who is funnier. This showed us the other side of the canidates. I agree with hemant about that how next presdient has a sense of humor and doesn't care about making fun of himself. I really tuaght diffente;y about mccain after seeing this video. ButI hope the final vote doesn't come down to who is more funnier.
