Doubting Democracy

After reading [article] what claims does the author make about our current political system?

Are you concerned about voter fraud?

Are you concerned about voter suppression?

What can we do to prevent such a dilema?

I am concerned about voter supression. I think think it it very dangerous and unfair. I believe that everyone should have the right to vote and the law clearly says all you need to vote is to be a 18 or older citizen of America. In the article it says "those without driver's licenses or other forms of government-issued identity cards are most likely to be Democrats." I agree with Ashley when she said theres no point in voting when people are not allowed to vote because of who they think they are going to vote for. That is just saying who is more popular and the president shouldn't be chosen on popularity.

Reading this article makes me think that I won't take no for an answer when I'm 18 and i go to vote. If we all just stand up and vote then they don't win. I am concerned of voting suppression because as Mr. Brown said most of America would rather just sit on the couch and watch the new season of American idol instead of challenging this problem.

I believe that its not fair and not right that people in our government dont think our vote should count. Are not citizens of the United States and over eighteen. I completely agree with Mr. Brown when he stated that fact about what you needed to vote. I also agree with Cleveland when he said that they have a small tatic that they are trying to use on us that if all those specified people cant vote then why vote at all. i have to admit these people are very goood at trying their hardest to get what they want and who they want in the office of our country but I cant stand the way they go about it. Why cant it just be a fair vote and everyone should go home hapy because it would be based on what the people voted for..

Although voter fraud will most likely not be an issue in New York State, it will certainly be an evident issue on Election Day. In swing states, Republicans may try to block possible Democratic voters with voter suppression and fraud techniques that they have used in the previous two elections. These successful formulas for winning elections are said to have been created and used by Karl Rove for the Bush campaigns.
This cannot go on any longer. Voter fraud and suppression deprives innocent Americans of one of the many basic rights an American citizen 18 years or older possesses, the right to vote. For a political party thats is based heavily on being a "true American", prides itself on patriotism and holding strong to our beliefs, it is very unamerican to remove one of the basic rights of innocent people.
Voter suppression is a crime and should be punished at all costs. Maybe if John McCain gets elected he could use his Maverick powers to crack down not only on earmarks (which are not necessarily a bad thing in Congress) but on criminal activities like voter fraud and suppression. Though that would certainly be a long shot. . .

After reading the artcle in class I agree with Mr.Brown and Ashley H. about "Most of America would rather just sit on the couch and watch the new season of American idol, then to go out and make a change." Which makes me concerned about voting supression. They just don't do whatever they want to do, it's almost like people are voting without any reason. If all of us try and give it our best, there would be a change. Whoever the people vote for should be what really matters because, we are citizens and we choose who gets to rule the U.S.

I think that voter surpression is unfair and it doesn't make the US a better democracy. Voting shouldn't depend on how you look or how smart you are, the rule is that if you 18 and a citizen you are allowed to vote. But we the people actually make it worse by being lazy. We feel like if the people vote in a room and flcik a switch and we have to fill out a form then why even bother voting. We need to stop being lazy because one vote can have a major affect on the election.

I am very concerned about voter fraud and suppression. I think that big steps have to be done to stop this major dilema. These two things are very harmful to all of us. Because if the wrong person wins (like they did last time) we will be in a lot of trouble. A way to stop this is to maybe have electronic registration & have all files on the computer. So there wouldn't be any confusion or anything. As to when you are at the voting booth, we have honest people working there and making sure that nothing goes wrong. We should arrest people who do voter fraud or suppression.

The Twenty-sixth Amendment to the Constitution of the United States states

Section 1. The right of citizens of the United States, who are eighteen years of age or older, to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of age.

Section 2. The Congress shall have the power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.

There are eight states that have not ratified the amendment Florida, Kentucky, Mississippi, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota
South Dakota, and Utah.

Maybe that's why in Florida during the 2000 presidential election and in 2004 voter fraud and suppression has occured.

Accoridng to the article six swing states mentioned Colorado, Indiana, Ohio, Michigan, Nevada and North Carolina have violated federal law.

As it says in Section 2 of the 26th Amendment I think that is the only way to prevent voter suppression and to develop a way to end voter fraud. Violating federal law needs to be stopped and Congress must reform the current political system. Also voters should fight suppression and bogus conditions imposed to stop them from voting.

The problem with this is that it can't be stopped. No matter how hard the government tries, there will be a slight presence of corruption. There isn't a single person that is neutral enough to be honest about everything and not take bribes.
Also, this election is flawed. Most of the voters will only vote for a candidate for who he is and not what they'll do in office.

The Supression is just one more thing to add to our list of problems that the U.S has to face today. It is terrible that a person can not vote if they dont present their state ID. That really bothers me. Another thing that shocked me was what Mr.Brown pointed out, the majority of people don't vote because thier candidate is in the lead. That is no excuse, get your buns of your couch and vote!. Those ansentee ballots are pointless to me. If i were to be handed one i would not even bother voting.Over all i believe that every U.S citizen should vote.....only once for each election(dont illegally vote again!)

Voter suppression is an inevitable thing. However the constitution is never going to give you up to anyone that might try to block your vote. We aren't strangers to the freedom that most of us take for granted. If you are going to vote and come across any type of vote suppression, tell the person that they know the rules and so do you. If they ask how you came to feel about it, the alleged voting suppression, tell them that other voting places made you run around and they deserted you before you could eventually get a valid vote in. Make them understand that your rights as an American are clear.

I feel that every American over eighteen should be able to vote, it's a privilege that we shouldn't take for granted. It's disgusting that people try to stop one another from voting. We live in a country that's all about democracy and rights and ironically there's voter suppression. If there were limitations on other freedoms, everyone would be outraged and there would be protests, but voter suppression goes on without much of a challenge. If someone is giving you a hard time, instead if giving up, you should push even more to fulfill your rights.

This article makes people doubt the importance of their vote. Voter fraud is a big deal and voters need to come together to make a change. The current administration will not want to change a system that they know how to work in their benefit. This issue is public but nobody wants to make a step towards change.

I disagree with what Apeksha said "A way to stop this is to maybe have electronic registration & have all files on the computer. So there wouldn't be any confusion or anything. As to when you are at the voting booth, we have honest people working there and making sure that nothing goes wrong."

We already have enough problems with voting machines. Then to register electronically and keep all files on would probably be worse. Even though there are electronic voting machines that exist. At the voting booth something always goes wrong especially in Florida for the past 8 years and it's happening again. In other states with early voting people are already stuck in lines with problems in the voting machines. As much as they might be honest some of the votes are not even counted with these problems.

Voter suppression is something we can't avoid. I think people should realize what is going on and not be discouraged to vote. The government should do something about this, it seems to me like they know what is going on but seem to not want to notice it. There should be a law or something trying to not let this happen, the election would run much better this way in my opinion.

Voter suppresion is such a mean and wicked thing. For any party to use tricks to win an election to me isn't not fair. No state or no one should go out and lie to voters or force voters to note vote on election day. Voting is a way to have your small voice hears in this big world filled with high big rich people. The only thing we the people have a say in is voting and if anyone is pursuading anyone to not vote i am against that. i think there should be more stricter laws in place so that states or people would not discourage voters to not vote. Many people think thta so many people will vote that they don't have to vote when the reallity is that evry single vote counts. Just think if 1000 people think that then the other candidate already has a possible 1000 vote lead over thw other. All i kno if i was voting and someone tried to stop me from voting i would take their name and put them in court.
