Is president Obama compromising our safety by offering to withdraw missles?

Should letters like these be made public?

How might the Iranian press use a story like this to their advantage?

I disagree with what Apeksha said in class becasue we have leaders to take care of certain issues like this. If Obama takes care of the situation, then I dont think it should matter. There are probably tons of things that happen and we may never find out about it but that doesnt make him a bad president. Maybe he's just protecting us from being fearful of whats happening.I cant excuses for the President of the United States but at least he's trying...

I agree with Cleveland. I don't think the secret letter should be made public because it will be easy for the enemy to find out what is going on. Apeksha also has a point that the people have the right to know whats going on but it's still better to keep it a secret. It's better to leave the people wondering and winning the war than informing the people and giving Iran a head's up.

My thoughts to the question “should a letter like these be made public” is no. The reason for my answer is because the president wants to accomplish a goal on his own. When he is done accomplishing his goal then he can take it upon his self to make it public or not. It’s just like FBI’s top secrets that no one can find out information about unless permission was giving.

In a way Obama is compromising safety but it is hard to say wether if its all for safety or just to gain an alliance. The letters should not be made public for safety reasons. The less people know, the better. We wouldn't have to worry about it.If made public it can leak back to iran for all we know. The letter is great motivation for the iranian people(which is bad for us) This can even cause chaos and even cause them to full head on attack us.

Whether or not letters and documents like this should be made public is a hard topic to debate because the fact is, we don't know much about national security as ordinary citizens. I kind of like it that way actually, and that's why letters like this should not be made public because the point of the SECRET is so nobody hears about it, whether it's Americans, Russians, Iranians or Scandinavians!
I'd love to know all about this letter, and as an American I may sometimes feel I have the right to do so. But the bottom line is it's not my job and if nobody is supposed to know about the letter, than no one should.
It doesn't seem like the Russians are so threatening toward us, whether or not we place missles in Eastern European countries. By pulling out these missles, Obama may or may not be compromising our safety. I think our safety depends more on how the Russians react to this situation. They need to sort out their priorities if they're willing to fire at Iran in order to get our weapons out of the Middle Eastern countries.

I don’t think president Obama is compromising our safety by offering to withdraw missles. What is going to happen is going to happen. I believe Obama is doing a good thing by trying to solve the dispute between the countries. I think these letters should be some what public. There is a good and a bad to both sides. If the letters are made public more reactions are going to occur. Many people of the country do not think outside the box so they will be against it not knowing his effort into resolving things for years later as well.
They can use it for their advantage by trying to prove that the United States is not on their side. Which is going to make Iran against Russia and the United States .

After reading this about Obomba's secret letter to the president of Russia in government class today .I notice that it sounded like this was too simple to be leaked epically when your getting all your information from some Russian newspaper. I honestly don’t believe that Obama is weakening our defenses on because i honestly don’t believe that Iran has nuclear bombs and Russia isn't going to Iran again because they wouldn't gain anything from it they would probable lose more money and troop this time .Then the last time they tried to take them over .At the end of the day i honestly believe that its a propaganda to increase support in the war against Iran and there highly improving country .Sadly I really don’t believe that we should know everything about politics because it's extremely stressful and confusing you’ll never get the real story at the end of the day i believe that we have a lot problems to come maybe even a new world war I honestly believe this is what may happen because Obomba could tell America almost anything and they would listen and believe it and seconds of all .Obomba is doing the same thing that FDR did to get them out of the depression and the only part that’s missing is the simple fact of a huge war . I really don’t buy the fact that the war in the middle east cost so m much i think they have a much bigger plan .Hopefully I’m extremely wrong on the huge war thing I just think that a lot of the things that America is doing is stepping on a lot of different countries feet and I really don’t think there going to let America get always with it for long.

My main objective of this whole article was to show that YES, the letter should have been public. Listen. I understand that somethings are better unknown. But what I don't understand is that this letter or the existence of this letter is now made public. It just makes president OBAMA look bad. Makes it seem like he's keeping secrets from us. Oh wait he is. BUT hellooo. NOW WE KNOW RIGHT? IF he just told us from the beginning I wouldn't feel so betrayed. Now I feel like he's doing things for our country that first of all I'm not sure if I agree with, and he's hiding it from us. So yes. This letter should have been made public.

I believe that we should know what is going on, but if we do know things I do not think that we would be able to move forward because people will always find something wrong with something. So maybe it was good that Obama made this "secret letter" a secret, but it weird that out of no where we hear about the letter even though we do not know what the wording in the letter is.

I don't think Mr. Obama is compromising our safety. Part of the deal is for Russia to eliminate the problem entirely.
The proposed missile defense shield will only protect against Iranian missiles. Being the only real threat in the range of the shields, Iran can't risk using any of their missiles in anger. Their will be an equal or greater response.
What really needs to happen is control of the Persian Gulf and control of the Iraqi and Afghan borders. Even though Iran doesn't have a nuclear arsenal, the technology and materials must be kept from going in our out.

One thing I noticed in class is when some were referring to recovery.gov
The website is only used to track the funds from the economic recovery plan, not normal government/defense spending.

As it said in the article “It has the potential to represent the most cooperative approach to a global threat by our two countries since President Reagan and Gorbachev signed the missile defense treaty 20 years ago.”

On terms, of that treaty both nations ought to be committed to those terms. By, enacting a missle defense system forcefully on Russia it will make relations worse.

A treaty needs to be arranged with the Iranians too. Certains things shouldn't be made public it can cause harm and disturb national security/foreign policy interests and agenda. The letter itself maybe a hypothetical and needs to be discussed further before making it public.

I think that these kind of things should be kept secretive. Now if America and Russia have an agreement, then Iran will know that Russia will attack them so Iran will now increase there defenses and there goes Russia's chance to wipe them out with a sneak attack. Now its going to become another little war.

Obama is making a rough decision to pull out those missiles in Poland. We cant be sure that Iran will still have one missile out there after Russia invades Iran and we wont have any defense missiles there so we might be taking a gamble with this proposal. If it was up to me, i would let the missiles stay and try to convince Russia that we dont want any missiles heading our way so we have to let them stay there. Even though you might be feeling threatened, taking those missiles out would be a huge risk for us.

i don't think that obama is compromising our safety, he is saying that he will remove the missiles only if the Russians move to bomb the Iranian nuclear plants. I think that letters like this should be kept secret because of how important the topic is.

I do not think that withdrawing the missiles will compromise the safety or America. Russia is a superpower and we need to have alliances in case of emergency. If we withdraw the missiles it shows that America is willing to compromise with other nations and other countries will like us once again. Obama came in to office with a motto of change and I think this is one way of changing America.

I understand that Poland and the Czech Republic don't want the missile program to be aborted because that is a source of income for their country, but they had worries before about being targeted by Russia and if we do not build the missiles there they do not have to compromise their safety. Like I said in class, in stead of building the missiles we can loose the lands or resources they were offering us and put it towards green energy research and development.

Obama is doing good in taking care of this situation, as Sana A had said that "Russia is a superpower and we need to have alliances in case of emergency." I agree with that because it shows others that we are defending other nations and are willing to help them by not taking the missiles. Ofcourse Poland wants us to by the missiles because its a profit for them, and there is never going to be a chance where Russia, Poland and Czech Republic will become allies.

I agree with Apeksha that the public should know whats going on. it would probably help everyone to be aware of everything else around them. The Iranian press would probably be against everything and come and try to attack us.

I don’t think that Obama is compromising the safety of the United States with the letter he sent out. I feel that this is his way of trying to stop Iran from making any more missiles and so he did what he felt would help him solve this problem faster and he did it by compromising with Russia. Though I also think that this can bring a bad side to the United States because Iran is going to feel like they're being stopped from doing what they want when they want and they might try and take action about this. Also I believe that letters like this should be made public in order for the people to know what is going on and so we are not clueless about any actions the president is taking.

I don't really think Obama is compromising our safety because I mean its his job to do what he thinks is right for the country. Why else was he elected as president? Sure I get that as citizens we should know what the government is doing but in the end it's not our call. Because we don't know all the behind the scene problems and strategies that take place. I think in the end its his call as the president. Basically I think he would know better than anyone else what he is doing and whether or not he is or isnt jepordizing our safety.

I don't think Obama is trying to compromise our safety by offering to withdraw missles, he just trying to find a way to resolve the issue. The letters should be made public because the people choosed a president so they have the right to know what he does, even if it is better for the country.

I believe that letters that are top classified should be kept secret. If the media knew about some of the things that are happening they might make it into a bad thing which might cause the people to panic and cause havoc. If the people found about the latter its mostly going to make the situation worse because it's not like the people are making the deals with Russia, so I think the public can only make it worse.

It's basicly playing a game. Who tell them you'll do this in exchange for something then maake it seem like you followed trough with their demands. Do i think it would work, I don't know?

I agree with anthony potter and cleveland that the secret letter by obama shuould not be Made public because then people will try to critsize his decision as president. However I believe that him trying remove missiles very compromises our safety because I think he is trying to cut out violence but what happens is somebody launches a missle at us.

I feel President Obama isn't compromsing our saftey by offering to withdraw missles. As long as some kind of compromise is reached, we'll be gaining something. Letters like these should be kept in secret, it compromises our Nation's security.

Obama happens to be a really smart
leader. He says he is compromising our saftey by offering to withdraw missles. If he does it can have both good and bad outcomes. 1. He does so and other countries lie and set them off on us. 2. He keeps them for just in case moments, and things continue how they are. As far as the iranians and there press are involved, they can probably start saying "oh Look they are giving up." that would give every other country the wrong idea.

I agree with Jennifer in the fact that the president does have the right to do what he thing is right for the country. If he thinks keeping this letter a secret is the best thing then it should be that way. Most times the American people get too much involved in what's going on and compromise or make decisions harder for political figures.
Yes Mr.Obama did in some what fashion go behind the backs of the American people, but he did it in order to protect us. In life you hear "somethings are better left unknown", and I think that rule does apply in this situation. Obama may do things as long as he doesn't make any deal, plans or commitment with other countries that may compromise the lifes of American people.

I think the government has plenty of secrets that are never meant to be made public but do. Its dangerous but everyone knows of a governments secrets. Protecting people is making sure they dont know the dangerous unless it can change a whole lot in a little amount of time. Obama took care of the situation in a good way thats why you dont relaly hear about it no more.
