Mom on Fire!

Questions we can ask the class would be :

1. Do you think it's necessary that there should be background checks at a shooting range?
2. Should they be using real bullets ?
3. Should there be better security at the shooting range ?
4. Do you think the women herself should have special care and maybe have documented papers with her saying she had an attempted suicide..or mental case?
5. Was it okay for the son to even consider going to the shooting range with his mom due to prior events ?

I would like to respond to question # 2 which was should they use real bullets? I believe they should not use real bullets. For some people its a nice fun thing to do to go out on fire ranges and just enjoy, but I don't believe they should involve real bullets. Also, to the other question that stated that the son shouldn't have went with his mother due to prior events. If he knew his mom had a menal illness he shouldn't have went, but he probably felt that she wouldn't do anything like that to him.

I think it is necessary for background checks especially if they shooting range uses real bullets because once the gun is loaded in a criminals hand, damage will be done. I also think they should use fake bullets so if an accident or a crime occurs, no real damage will be done. Security should be real tight at a shooting range.

The issue here isn't whether a woman with a previous history of mental unstability should be allowed to rent a handgun at a shooting range, it's whether guns should be so readily available to all who wish to rent or buy them. In the South the culture of guns is much different than up North. Most kids have probably seen a gun below the Mason-Dixon line, and it isn't common for them to have used one too.
The people down there will do anything to make sure they have their guns available. They have set up a system where now the patron at the gun range is held responsible for their own actions. I wouldn't be surprised if the laws are as loose at a gun store as they are at a shooting range.
I think bearing arms is stupid because the only reason people originally wanted that right was to be armed in case of the need of a "well regulated militia". Now it is transformed into that overprotective people think they need guns to protect themselves. Some also use them for hunting. None of these things are necessities to life. If guns were illegal, nobody would need guns to protect themselves for other people with guns, right?

i think it is nessassary that there should be background checks because it can prevent something bad from happening. Its a shooting range there supposed to use real bullets, but after the person using the loading gun should be checked. The security in the shooting range should be better or else the event of the mother killing the son wouldnt of tooken place and noone would off been hurt, also after the event were she try to do it before. Yes, i think the woman defintely, without a doubt should be given special care, if she tryed killing her self before what makes everyone think she wouldnt do that again and hurt someone else while doing it. The son should of been aware of her ideas, since she also did a previous attept, and i think the son was very careless, and i guess he was okay with gog with his mom and being killed by her too. The shooting range idea should be changed itself, because if people can just come there, and not be checked, many people ca be hurt. This time the woman killed her son, and maybe next time everyone there probably get killed along with thmselves. That would be a horrable event.

First of all Mr. Brown I just wanted to say that the lady was crazy and I strongly agree that they shuld have a background check on people so idiocity like this wouldn't happen in the world. They have to see what the person is about and see if they are lieing or not. But the son is stupid for going with his mom because he knows her history and her mental problems like u live in the house with her everyday.

I think that background checks are definately nessecary. For safety reaons they should have a reservation process. That way the shooting range can look deeply into a persons history before they are allowed in.

Security may not stop someone from killing themselves or someone else. I jus think shooting ranges should be better regulated and it should be mandatory to have a background check on everyone that comes in.

I don't think that the woman having mental papers would have changed anything. Obviously, she would not have told them she was sick because they wouldn't have let her in. I think they should issue ID's to these people that indicate mental disorders to avoid this from reoccuring, especially since it was known that she had a disorder.

Yes I think it's necessary to do background checks, because if we don't we will have more situations like the one that just happened. The lady was mentally ill, and she was allowed to go to a shooting range ? It doesn't make any sense. I also think that okay, if the lady is doing better from her sickness, she should be checked on every month or every two months. Maybe house checks. Also the son knew about his mother's illness, he should have known better.

Okay obviously the person had a mental problem.im not saying its wrong ot have one but if SHE hada backround check this wouldnt have happened in the first place. And the sons a smart one, for going with his insane mother to a shooting range..serioiusly.. what was he thinking. The second i heard that she use to write journals about her and little epic stories about her fixing everything or failing god or heaven and hell. Right a trigger should go off in the familys head that says "maybe we should put her in a home.So yea im all for backround checks, because god for bid by chance i decide to go to one after i get a gun, permit & license i dont want crazy people to shoot me as well.

I think that if you go to a shooting range they should do background checks on you even if its going to take a lot of time. If they think that business is going to decrease they should just know that all shooting range places will be under the same process. This will be the only way to know who is mentally capable of handling themselves with a gun and who is not. I also believe that what the son did by going to a shooting range with his mentally disabled mom wasn't the best idea. He should have tried to convince her not to go or just stayed home because he didn't know what she was going to do there when she’s mentally disabled.

I AGREE WITH POTTER IN HIS RESPONDS TO THIS ARTICLE. I THINK THERE SHOULD BE BACKGROUND CHECKS FOR PEOPLE THAT GO TO A GUN RANGE. JUST THE FACT THAT THE WOMAN TRIED TO KILL HERSELF BEFORE AT THE SAME GUN RANGE IS CRAZY. A PERSON LIKE HER NEEDS TO BE SENT TO A HOME WITH SPECIAL TREATMENT. NOW HER SON IS CRAZY BECAUSE IF I KNEW MY MOTHER WAS LIKE THAT I WOULD NOT SUPPORT THE FACT THAT SHE SHOULD GO OUT TO GUN RANGES OR GET INVOLED WITH ANYTHING OF THAT MATTER.

Background checks are necessary at a shooting range, but there should be a well thought and detailed process on how to perform these background checks.

Depending on her mental illness, certain mentally disabled patiens do have special care. Even those that aren't mentally ill, guns shouldn't be easily accessible to them either.

Incidents like these might have occured before, and maybe some of the individuals weren't even mentally ill.

Despite having tighter security, shooting ranges should not exist. Shooting ranges should be banned. What is the benefit of having destructive pleasure? It is not a necessity to have a shooting range.

The right to bear arms need not be applied in this case. In this case, it is not a right.

i think that the son shouldn't have gone with her to the shooting range knowing her prior history, this woman obviously thought she was sane, and wouldn't put down she was crazy. i think that they should do background checks for the safety of the range and the people in it.

I'm not into the idea of shooting ranges but it's better than practicing in your backyard or harming others because your inexperienced with a handgun or rifle. Background checks should be performed on people buying or renting guns, even though this may hurt some businesses, It's netting many of the people who are dangerous. It's a touchy subject because our forefathers fought for rights, to people opposed to regulating gun laws it's a slippery slope. We once fought for the right to bear arms and it may seem to them as if the next thing that happens is soldiers being quartered in their homes.

I think it's necessary to do background checks because, something bad can happening using from the real bullets oe the security of gun that shooting range. They should be careful and more protecting about bullets that might into accident.

In the world we live in today you can never be too safe. I believe that there should be backround checks for shooting ranges. Gun use is very dangerous and one bullet can easliy take somebody's life. Having somebody who is mentally ill should not have a handgun with real bullets, which anwsers questions #2. I think that shooting ranges should not use real bullets, and see what happens. By not having real bullets you can almost assure that no will get severely harmed.

I think with anything involes a firearm thier should be backround check, cause you can never really know what could be wrong with a person. when you have a backround check it's not just protecting that person but yourself, your company, and who ever is around that person with the firearm.

Since this is an on going problem I feel the police in her town should have been more careful with this woman. Apparently she has been crazy for a long time and this is an on going problem. In the sons case he should have known that his mom wasn't emotionally and mentally stable to be going to a shooting range.
Any person that writes over 60 journals to themeselves is somewhat crazy. She calls her boyfriend a king and calls herself the fallen queen and the anti-christ. SHE HAS TO BE CRAZY!!!!
At shooting ranges there should now be a background check to see what kind of people are shooting with guns. A question isn't enough information for a shooting range to determine if a person is able to properly handle a loaded gun. There needs to be more precautionary rules in place.

There shouldnt be questioned as to if there should be background checks because dealing with guns is not a game or joke. After reading the article, it really got me off-guard because the her whole background was really freaky. Trying to commit suicide in the past and thinking she is the Antichrist is not normal. The security guards should have seen her point the gun to her son head and should have done something before she could fire it. This whole incident is just another problem that America has to deal with.

i don't think it is necessary for them to have a background check, because the people are entering in their own risk. if they take all that time to do background checks then no ones going to come to the place, and no business is going to be made, another reason that might crash down our economical crisis more then it is already. it's not our choice for the woman to carry papers of her not being mentally stable. we can not force anything on someone. her son and people around her knew she had tried to commit suicide so they should know better not to take her to places such as a shooting range.

After reading this article I believe that only people that own their own guns should be allowed to go to the shooting rang because people aren’t going to just sell guns to anyone. This mother obviously had some kind of mental issue and her son shouldn’t have brought her to the shooting range. It would take a long time for the workers at the shooting range to actually pull up information to make sure you’re mentally stable to be there so I can see why they don’t, but they should just let people like cops and people of military in the shooting ranges. They can keep a file of all of them and it would be easier than having random people there.

Besides the fact that this women is completely out of her mind, As Mr. Brown said, you kind of have to question the son as to why he would go to a range with her knowing her condition and previous attempts. Did he even think before he said sure Mom ill go with you to a shooting range even though you tried to kill yourself countless times..I just dont he thought the whole thing, I mean being that your mother has been diagnosed as a crazy person ( in some sense), why would you go to a shooting range with her???? So I definitely agree with Mr. Brown

J.Canales said...

The shooting range should have done some further research on the woman's background. They should know if a person is mentally capable of hold ing a weapon. I think the son should have had common sense and not take his mother to the shooting range, considering she has gone there and tried to commit suicide. I mean this woman believed she was the antichrist and wrote 63 journals about her mental condition. This woman was very mentally unstable and should have been taken care of in the first place.

The question of whether or not to use real bullets at a range shouldn't even be asked. If blanks are used, then what is the point of going to a range. You might as well go paintballing.
As for the background checks, there should be a nationwide system setup for gun ranges so they can check if a potential customer has any criminal or mental blemishes on their record. In fact, there are private websites such as zabbasearch.com which can pull up a person's recorded history in a matter of minutes.
The son probably loved his mother. He would have liked to think that his mother was okay and he wanted to prove it any way he can. Unfortunately, he was wrong.

I agree with Gitu i think there should be background check on people at shooting ranges, there are so many different people who can go in there and get easy acess to killing someone or learning to kill someone. Another option would be to only open them to cops or people who are legally licensed to use guns.

I think that this is very tragic. I think that there should be more security in things like this, because a gun is deadly and look what happen. When handed in the wrong hands this tragic event can happen. Guns shouldn't be used for practice only for police officials, in my opinion. WE do have the right to bear arms but do we have the right to shoot people we feel threatened with. Do it the old way and fist fight its safer. NO but definitely more security needs to go into making sure people that get weapons can use them in a safely manner.
