Security vs. Liberty

By listing 14 countries that the US will increase airline security from how will that change flying?

Is making a list of suspect countries profiling?

Are we at war with these countries?

Should US citizens be guaranteed the highest level of security on every flight? How are we willing to pay for this?

Yes this is profiling because it is making only a list of 14. All Security should be the same no matter where the point of origin. I don't think we are particularly place with those countries because we want security. I think ALL citizens not just the U.S should be guaranteed the same amount of security.

From reading the passage about the security the 14 countries that the US listed are where most trouble and high jacker came from and with the increase of the airline security their would be more hand down person to person check plus the security machines so by doing that it would be more safer. No we are not at war with these city's because we are protecting one of them or helping them we are just at war with theses who do harm to us. I do think the US should have the higher level of security because the US is known for its different ethnicity and allow many people to come into the state and out. We can pay for this by increasing the plain tickets to make the citizens who broad the plains who puts there lives in to the air to pay for there own security so they really know they are safe.

I think The United States idea of listing the fourteen countries that will have increasing airline security for, will back fire on the United States. I think that terrorist will just leave from another country.I don't think it's the place they come from that's the probelem , but that our security isn't the tightest. The list that was made is definately a form of profiling. We aren't at war with all of these countries but i think "the list" will cause confrontation between them and us. I'm not sure if we are willing to pay for top security , but I think it's something we need.

It will increase inconvience and flight delays but it will not increase security. If people know that their country is on a list for extra security, they can always have connections to someone in another country thats not on a list to make a terroist plot. Yes making a list of suspect countries is profiling. Anybody in the world could try and harm the country but why narrow it down to where the person is from to suspect that everyone from that place will do the same. The person could just easily go somewhere else to accomplish their goal. If someone from china tries to bomb a plane, is the US going to put extra security on every that comes from China? They probably would but its a waste of time. Security would focus on checking people from the country thats on the list instead of other people from other countries. Security should just do their job and check people throughly so we won't have any problems. No we are not at war with these countries. If we continue to profile checking certain countries throughly, it could cause controversy. No we shouldn't have the highest level of security on every flight becuase if we focus more on terriost plots on a plane, terriost are going to move somewhere else. "There like roaches, if you flash a flashlight on them they will go away," Mr. Brown. If we continue to spend money on top security for every flight, what will we do about security if someone decides to bomb 20 buses?

I would like to start off this comment by saying "A country has to do, what a country has to do", and these words are coming from a Nigerian. Perhaps I am only saying that because I don't travel that often or I haven't experienced the profiling yet, but I rather be safe then sorry. Of course creating a list of 14 countries you are going to search more securely is profiling however this is better than closing our doors to them completely which is another possible route we could have taken. The 14 countries that are being more securely looked at are going to have some issues when it comes to flying out to the United States. I also feel that others countries citizen might get that worried feeling that they also aren't being securely protected and that they should get more intense security for their nation also using the 14 country list. We aren't at war with these nations directly we are at war with the terrorist of the country. It vexes me how the U.S is targeting predominately Muslim nations, a Christian, a Jew, or a Catholic could do just the same amount of damage as any Muslim. And even though the young man who attempted to blow up the plane was a Nigerian born, he traveled to Yemen and his own family ratted him out. Which means to me that Nigerians aren't really the ones who are trying to cause harm and that Nigerians are against the idea if his own family would tattled on him. So I don't really understand why the Nigerian nation is a flight risk to America. I honestly just believe that in sometime the situation will die down and everyone will forget about it and worry about something else and that is what the terrorist are watching and waiting for so they can attack again.

Should US citizens be guaranteed the highest level of security on every flight? How are we willing to pay for this? CHINA

By listing the 14 countries that the US will increase airline security from, yes we are profiling this 14 countries, and I believe that doing so will surely just make the job of the terrorist a lot easier, because all they have to do is change this “ideal” look of a terrorist and change the location from where they arrive. I am sure, the terrorist are already once step ahead of this and have already planned out the next move. I don’t think this a smart move because in my opinion, this isn’t going to change anything and like MR.BROWN said in class, if the terrorist really want to continue there will be many other ways to do so, once they cant attack airplanes anymore it will be boats, than busses than trains and than eventually cars. So I believe that the united states just needs to stop profiling people and just search EVERYONE, no matter what ethnicity or what country they are coming from, I think this is the ONLY way to fully feel save.

Are we at war with these countries?

Putting extra airline security in the 14 countries doesn’t mean we are at war with them, but profiling them might eventually lead to that, and ruin out relationship with even more countries and that not good for us.

Should US citizens be guaranteed the highest level of security on every flight? How are we willing to pay for this?

No, US citizens shouldn’t be guaranteed the highest level of security, because every country should have the equal amount of security, its not far to other countries when we are getting all the benefit but all of their citizens aren’t.

But my question is what happens when the next attack is from Russia, are we going to add them to the list too? Make it fifteen? Than sixteen? Eventually we’ll have the whole world on that list, than what’s going to happen?

I don’t see the point for the U.S. to make a list of 14 countries to increase security against, and even making the list public. Making the list public was one mistake that I think the U.S. made; now that the list is public, the terrorists can just find another country to go on an airplane. Making the list was the second mistake because there is no reason to isolate 14 countries as the main threat to the U.S. There could still be attacks from other countries, and if that happens would the U.S. just add them to the list because eventually the whole world would be on the list. It would make more sense just to increase the overall security and make it affect every nation. It is prejudice to make an extra check on the innocent person from Somalia, while the person from England, who doesn’t get the extra check, might have a bomb on him. Instead of the list, there should be the highest level of security on every flight, for the protection of the U.S. citizens. Even though the full body scan is an “invasion of privacy”, it is meant for your protection; it is a useful way to prevent acts of terrorism in airports. As long as it is for my safety, I would be willing to pay extra when making a flight to another country.

Honestly all i have to say is one thing. Everyone should go threw the security check in the airlines. I know they have appointed out 14 countries but, the can hire anyone for example a white man who is hilghy not going to have to go into the security check, they can have him take the merchandise in his bag because they won't suspect anything is on him. So by screening everyone is the best possible way to handle a problem even though I really wouldn't want to and am not the one who would be appointed at, but the person you least expect can have a a bomb or a weapon and use it. They should have more security and, and have people from the U.S go and work at airlines in the other 14 countries.

I think citizens of every country should be guaranteed the highest level of security on every flight. Why are US citizens more important or special than anyone else in any other country? Making a list of 14 countries, public probably wasnt the smartest idea because like most people said terrorist will go outside of the 14 countries, or if they're not smart still try to come or go out of these 14 countires. The airports security check and air flight should come together to figure out a way that wont cause people to miss their flight because of security checks as well as people being smart enough to come a an hour or so earlier than normal.

The list the US made was completely and utterly pointless. EVERYBODY should be checked when going through the airport. Once the US made the list public, they put the US at risk. Since the 14 countries are aware of the list they will concoct new ways to bypass security. I don’t feel we are at war with those countries but I think this will stir up some bad feelings and might manifest into a war.

By increasing air line security based on the fourteen countries listed for the United States to keep an eye on, will definitely change flying to become more chaotic. Many people will most likely be offended once they’re stopped in the airport just because they’re from one of those fourteen countries. The list of suspect countries is profiling but I feel that it’s a step closer to ensuring some kind of safety for the people living in our country. It doesn’t necessarily mean we are at war with all of these countries but I do think it will increase tension between countries and eventually provoke a war.

By listing 14 countries that are securities risks is profiling but at the same time we are only reacting to previous incidents. If the terrorists were from Jamaica then we would profile anyone from or coming from Jamaica it’s not that we like to be profiling but we really have any choice. All this profiling will make flying more annoying and complicated since there will be more random searches and any little incidents will be blow out of proportions. We’re not at war with these countries but they are under close watch. Since more security is needed to prevent a terrorist attack from happing again plane tickets will increase.

Safety of the American people should be the main priority. Who cares if we are profiling 14 countries that we believe is a high risk for an attack. As Andre said "I think ALL citizens not just the U.S should be guaranteed the same amount of security." yes that would be nice, but not all countries can afford a new security upgrade. But before we worry about other countries we need to worry about ourselves. And it also seems as if the U.S is a main target right now for everyone. So i guess we will be using that "credit card" that China has given us to protect ourselves. We'll pay them back. Right??

For only 14 countries to be listed as the most dangerous or willing to attack the US would be profiling, and it would also be a bit dumb. If you are to single out only a certain group of countries then the terrorists would then take another route to attack the US because all focus would be off of them due to the profiling of the 14 countries.
Not only would it be profiling but it would increase other people's flying antiexties. Due to the increased security flight tickets would increase the time to be searched, and boarding of a plane would be increased, leavin people more frustrated with the whole travel arrangements all together.

I believe that a list of terrorists should b distributed to all airports, and to all traveling stations (trains etc.), but this should not be displayed to the public but to organized, trained, specialists and officials.

I do believe, and then again do not believe that the US should be the main, and number one protected country from airline services because we unline a few countries HAVE been attacked by terrorists in the past, but then again what about others? If we are all security surrounded, and video recorded, or protected, and searched what would happen to the next country that's never been attacked before, isn't prepaired for an attack, and isn't protected against it? It's all a matter of past events, but also it can be a matter of naiveness(?) or being unprepaired. Terrorists don't HAVE to come after the US they chose to, so they can if they pleased choose other places to attack, and bomb.

I agree with elizabeth when she said "It will increase inconvience and flight delays but it will not increase security. If people know that their country is on a list for extra security, they can always have connections to someone in another country thats not on a list to make a terroist plot" its true if this warning sign is every where around the world they are going to find another way to come to the U.S and have war. Its some what wrong how the people on the list have to be checked twice because of where there coming from. It can be anyone , the people that are being checked twice the person beside them can be a terrorist . We have to be more aware of our surroundings espically the Secutiry people.

Yes, as sad as it is, this is an act of profiling. However, I am for "almost" anything that can prevent further attacks upwards America. I realize that this throws America's whole "home of the free and the brave" out of whack, but these lists and airport security measures are a possible way to reduce further attacks.

I don't really think it's profiling if we take extra precautions with passengers boarding from the specific 14 countries. It's always better to be safe than sorry. And I do not think we are technically at war with the 14 countries, just keeping a closer watch on them. So yes we should be guranteed the highest level security on every flight, even if it means invading someones privacy.

While thinking about this passage and the changes that not only the Us has to go through but worldwide it creates chaos. Though it is for the safety of the passengers, it is also due to past events. IF the re occuring events still happen the change of flying is going to be no one flying at all. By saying that it is profiling certain countries due as i said past events. IF one apple spoils it is spoils for all. The profile examines that when you see a certain ethnic enter an airport you jump to conclusion.
is it based on the controversy that we may have with these countries? Who knows. We as a nation is being disciplined for the actions that not WE as a nation decided on but what the government decided for us.

I don’t think that making a list of 14 countries will make flying any more safe than it is now. While someone from those countries may be more likely to attack, we cannot single out anyone and have ourselves wishing we hadn’t done so when something happens from an unexpected place. Also now that the list is public terrorists will know where not to recruit from. I think that while the extra security is helpful, we should work more to stop these attacks or attempts from even coming to fruition. That will make Americans feel more at ease about traveling.

While reading this passage it made me think back to american history, and how when there's a war, the President is no longer limited to his power. So, I believe there are good reasons why the Obama administration’s decision was to mandate extra scrutiny. There will be a change in flying becuase a lot of people already hate the idea of tight security and just maybe this list of supect countries is a way of profiling. I believe all citizens should be guaranteed the highest level of security on every flight but I dont have a suggestion on how to pay for it. The question, "Are we at war with these countries", and my answer is Are we?

Ana J. said...

With these changes, there will be a lot of delays. The scanners are quite helpful but it's still not pratical. As for making a list of suspected countries, it is profiling. Now that the list was shown to the public, the terrorists could easily move to another country. We're not exactly at war with these countries but by targeting those Muslim countries, it will provoke a lot of altercation. There should be a high level of security for all US citizens. The scanners are uncomfortable to pass through since it reveals all but it's for your safety. How is it going to be paid, I don't know, but it's necessary.

I believe that listing the 14 countries to add security is profiling because it is saying that anyone from these countries can be or become a terrorist. i also agree with andre saying that all security should be the same. i also do believe that US citizens should get the highest feeling of safety because who in there right mind wont want to be safe. Do the same maximum security everywhere and everyone will be happy.

For the U.S it is a hard time regarding the issue of security. I think that listing fourteen countries in which security would be tougher on is racial profiling. Honestly in my opinion it’s blatantly clear that it’s racial profiling. They are going to suspect people of being likely of committing a crime based off of their race, this is wrong in my book. I think that living in America which prides itself on “equality” its being kind of hypocritical. This will change flying because now it’s going to be a longer process to board a flight. I think that no matter what security does it will never be air tight! People make mistakes and things slip through the cracks, it’s inevitable. Security becoming tougher is a good thing but I think that with these new x-ray vision machines it might be going a little overboard.
