Courteney Richardson

In class we had a discussion on should students have the right to bring cell phones to school?! Mr. Brown pointed out a point of saying , it shouldn't be a "right" but it should be allowed. I believe students should always have a cellphone in their backpacks (on silent or vibrate, which can't be seen or heard) in case of a emergency such as terroist attack since that's on high alerts or they missed the bus and have no way to get. Cellphones are very useful at times in even in school cause of the memory and pictures you have. But the negativity of cameras on phones is some are using phones to take pictures of the wrong thing , but I think since we are seniors in high school which goes for all grades in high school are mature enough to handle them selves and have a responsibility to keep it M.I.A

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg has jurisdiction over the school discipline code and yes! Our "rights" are def. being violated because its OUR cellphones, not the mayor's. It's true that the schools are his property, but so what? The cellphones are our property and I feel like we should bring it whenever we want to. What happens if we get stalked when we walk home or something? Pay phones aren't always available. That's why i feel like we should ALWAYS have our cellphones with us. I really want to see what Bloomberg's reaction would be if someone took his cell away since i mean he has work, so wouldn't it be a bother?

students dont have rights but they should be alound to bring cells phones 2 school as long as its not secne or hread in class.

I agree with evryone e3lse who has posted their views before me. I agree with Kemi on we don't have rights , but we "should" be allowed to carry cellphones. As we talked about the penumbra rights, which was about a shadow being casted, and about fake rights. You ask who has the juristiction over the school discipline code, as we talked about it in class ; you said Bloomberg has a lot of rights over the school discipline code. When you showed thethat bfore the BOE, use to make the rules on the discipline code, now the mayor makes more of the choices. The rules and laws can be changed by allowing students to carry cellphones, but the students have no rights to allow to be seen. (Manpreet Kaur)

I agree one hundred percent with Courteney. Even though students dont have a right to carry a cell phone in school, we should definitely be allowed to. If cell phones are kept in a locker or bookbag, either on silent or turned off, theres no reason we cant have them. Cell phones are useful when it comes to school, such as recording videos or taking pictures. While there are the few things that schools dont want, such as using phones to cheat, take inappropriate pictures, or even going off and disrupting the class, that doesnt take a way all the reasons we should have cell phones. And if they are put away and not bothering anybody, theres no reason for us not to be allowed to have them.

I personally think they should be more lenient towards the cell phone policy. Yes, if students are aloud to have cell phones at all times in school even during class, it will definitely disrupt the class but students should know that you come to school to learn and that’s it. If students don't understand that and use their cell phones then what's the point of coming to school while you can be anywhere else and talk on the phone or text? Courteney has a great point, if there's an emergency such as terrorist attack or they missed a bus and have no way to get home, they would need a cell phone to contact someone. Students should know the right and wrong times to use their cell phones because teachers work extremely hard for students like us to learn and it’s just not right to violate that. In conclusion, I think that the cell phone policy should be more lenient because students do need their cell phones for emergencies and it’s up to the students to actually be mature about it and use it at the right times.

Its not that we necessarily NEED a cell phone, but if a person has one the have many resources at their disposal. If anything, we should all have the privilege of carrying a cell phone into school (as long as it is not disruptive; I.e. loud) because of the way society is nowadays. We are heavily dependent on technology and communication. We need to be able to contact anyone at any given moment. But as students in the Bloomberg Era, we need to have some sort of discretion on how we use our cell phones in school. We can't be taking revealing pics of our peers w/o them knowing or answering calls in the middle of class. Nor can we abuse the leniency of the authority figures. As for theft, if any of us are a victim of a robbery at school, do not hold the school personally responsible... Courtney Wilson

I basically agree with everyone else, having a cellphone in school isnt mainly a right that every student has but more of a privledge that we take upon our selves to do. To tell you the truth cellphones are disruptive in the classrooms with all of the features such as cameras brought with it, but still in this day and age I feel cellphones are a must have resource for many, for an emergency or to keep in contact with others. For many students a cellphone can be considered a lifeline between their parent and themself as said in class. If you are taking a cellphone to school you should be responsible for it. I agree with Courtney in that us being seniors we are mature enough to handle it.

I agree with every one, But I think they should let us have them because every one dose not live by there school and have to travel very long distances. Now what do they do if the bus gets into an accident and they wont let anyone off the bus. its late at night now how are you suppose to call your parents to let them know. So they can come an get you or know that you will be late. Now say this happen to you and you don’t live that far from school so you just have to walk a couple of blocks and no someone is fallowing you and you make all these turns and still they are there how can you call your mom or dad to help you or how can you call the cops

I understand the reasoning for cell phones to not be allowed in schools but as Courteney said if there was godforbid an emergency such as 9/11 then there would be noone to contact. If you think about all the chaos that it would bring up, noone would care what happens to you, it would basically be a free for all. Which is the reason parents call your CELLULAR telephone or vice versa, so they/you dont panic.

People in america today, especially teenagers, have become dependent on their cellphones. With any new technology there are drawbacks that come along with the benefits. I agree with Courteney that as high school students we are mature enough to carry cell phones. And we are also understand the consequences of our actions. If a student texting or going online in class it is their problem because they are the ones missing the lessons and their education. We all feel very vulnerable without are cell phones because they are our life-lines in case of an emergency. There will always be small isues with students misusing their cell phones, but that does not mean we should put the majority of students in danger to punish a select few. Mayor Bloomberg should be focusing his energy and resources on the true problems in the city's Board of education not the artifical ones.

I agree with most of the comments left before mine. Even though we are not entitled to the right to carry cell phones, we should be allowed to. The topic of potential danger, and having cell phones as a saftey precaution was brought up. Most parents feel that they need to keep in touch with their children especially incase of emergancy. As long as cellphones are on silent and out of sight, students should be allowed to carry them on school groungs without having to worry whether or not they will taken away.

I'm glad most of you agree with each other on this issue. One thing I am concerned with though is the spelling and grammatical errors. You are not only representing yourself (The class of 2008), but the school as well. Be mindful of your comments. Write them in word, spell check them,re-read them, then post them into blogger!

I completely agree with Courteney. I think that students should have the right to be able to take cell phones to school. I’m not saying that students should be allowed or not punished when they attempt to use their phones in school, or when a student’s cell phone continues to go off in class. I know that people have gone through many of years without the use of cell phones, but why take something away now, that we have grown so dependent on. I think that students would be able to adapt if New York decided to stick with this banding of cell phones, but I think that you would gain a whole lot of un happy New Yorkers. Whether it is the students or the parents, many people may view this banning of cell phones as just a business gain. But who really knows the truth. We as New Yorkers just need to sit back, enjoy the ride, and see what Mayor Bloomberg has in store for us.

This is a great topic. My USH class is discussing the responsibilities of government right now. This would be a great talking point. If it's OK, I'd like to invite our class into this discussion.

i agree with everyone who comment about the cell phone band but my opinion is students should have the right to bring them to school for personal reasons some may travel far and some parents lets there children have it for reasons so they know they can get in contact with them and know there safe. They might not recommend it to be allowed in school but if you look at it from my point of view students still wont listen they always will have an excuse for why they have there cell phones on them or using it. It can be a distraction to the classes but theres nothing you can do unless you really fight for them not to be brought into schools

We don't really have the right to take our cell phones to school. Legislature has been passed that allows us to carry it too and from school, but the city council can't say we can bring them in and Bloomberg was quick to point that out. I think that as long as they are off they won't be a distraction. Admittedly there are those among us who aren't responcible enough to be trusted not to use them to fool arround and not distract others, but I think that the desicion should rest with the admisistration of the school and not the DOE. After all who knows the students better?

This what I call a " The Authority Got bored" law. Due to the recent tragedy and the escalating crim and violence that we have been having in NYC parents everywhere have equipped all of there children from big to small, or little to tall with what we call a cell phone. More of a just incase of emergency item. So now wouldnt you think stopping children from carrying them would be jus plain stupidity. If its tucked away not bothering anybody or being played with there should be no issue with the cell phone in school.

I agree with john with the few irresponsible kids in schools that take them out in class and using them in distracting ways. I also agree with him when he states that the problem should be solved within the school instead of the D.O.E. I think that cell phones can be used in a positive way. Some ways that it can be used positively is to use it to inform students about anything that is going on in the school. It can also be used to transport useful information from some phones that can e-mail to computers. This can only work if the students are responsible.

I think cell phones can be very helpful in school and i belive if students were allowed to bring them theyd have less of an urge to use them during class. Using text messaging u can contact with students and use the interenet on phones to help with work since there are only a few computers in each room. I think if cell fones become legal in public schools kids will be more willing to learn.

i dont agree with the cell phone band an its not just becuase im a student, i feel that cell phones shouldnt be banded becausein a bad situation an in a public highschool withh 1000+ students that a parents best way to get to there child. Our rights are not being violated at all in my opinion i dont feel not being allowed to carry your cell phone in school is a right. I dont know who set these rules but there are a few ways to argue them, petitions an things like that...

I agree with Kemi because I think that we should be able to carry a cell phone as long as no one sees it or hears it while we are in class. I feel that it makes parents feel that their children are safer if they have a cell phone becuase if god forbid anything happens they will have a way to reach us.If a cell phone is stolen then that is the students fault they should have known how to prevent this. When a phone is stolen its not armed robbery, kids do it the sneaky way.

I agree w. Kemi immediately when she stated students dont have rights at all because if we did we'd have a say in certain decisions they make. I feel lik eif the cell phones are on silent/vibrate & are kept hidden i there bags it shouldnt be a problem. To me its for security & protection. I do understand there are more con`s than pros with having a cell phone in school. its easier access to cheat & be disruptive. But 9 times out of 10 thats not going to be the issue. i also agree w. Courteney Wilson when he said because of societys ways we need communication an are heavily dependent on technology i think that everyone has there own intentions & motives so you never know what could happen at any given moment.

I agree with what most students said about carrying cellphones. I think we should be able to carry phones because our parents get worried about where their kids go after school. If the phones are put away in the student's bags and its off, the teachers or the school shouldn't be bothered by it. I think we should definitely be able to carry phones.
